Incredible sculptures by Andrea Blasich based on Searle's Lautrec girls

Tuesday, 22 October 2013

There has never been a retrospective exhibition of Ronald Searle's work in northern California.   'Searle In America' will be a survey of his work made in America on reportage assignments for HOLIDAY magazine during the 60s  heyday of magazine illustration.
The exhibition will be staged this November at the Cartoon Art Museum, San Francisco.  To raise funds for shipping of original Searle artwork to California and printing costs for the catalogue I've asked friends from the animation/illustration community to contribute original Searle-inspired artwork to a fundraiser auction.  Over the summer we auctioned all of these wonderful tributes by today's top cartoonists.  Feel free to leave comments on your favorite.

'For the past 14 years caricaturist, cartoonist and illustrator Jonathan Cusick has worked for many prominent clients, winning a number of awards along the way.

Notable clients include prolific illustrations for the Radio Times (over 70 issues), a weekly caricature for The Times' TV review on Saturdays, and the cover of the 2010 QI Annual. He has illustrated advertising campaigns including Cadbury sponsorship of Coronation Street on ITV. In 2013 an ad campaign featuring Jonathan's caricatures runs across the USA. He has also designed characters for a Hollywood film.

His caricature art has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, London (in the BP Portrait Award), The Mall Galleries (with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters), and Chris Beetles Gallery. A solo exhibition was held at the Coningsby Gallery, London, in 2005. His work has regularly been selelcted for the Association of Illustrators Images annuals, for which he has also been a judge, and also Luerzer's Archive 200 best illustratorsWorldwide.

After graduating with a first in Illustration from the University of Central England in 1999, Jonathan later studied briefly at the Prince of Wales Drawing School in Shoreditch, where he met the Prince. 'Remarkable' was the enthusiastic response to Jonathan's cartoon approach, though there's no word on the Knighthood ...yet.

A number of celebrities have purchased Jonathan's caricatures of themselves, including; the late DJ John Peel, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Raymond Blanc, Heston Blumenthal, Sir Michael Parkinson, David Dickinson, comedian Ben Miller, and Queen legend Brian May.

As a cartoon illustrator and caricaturist, Jonathan has made appearances on BBC Radio 4 and BBC1. Back in 2002 the Sunday Times magazine tipped him as one to look out for in their 'Next Big Thing' feature.'

Auction update!

The fundraiser auction went staggeringly well with all the pieces selling way above expectation.  Ebay actually imposed a 'selling limitation' so we still have over 20 pieces of artwork to go but that will have to wait until early September.  Right now we have enough funding to transport the original Searle artwork to California and we can proceed with work on the catalogue.
I can't thank all of my creative friends around the world who contributed time & effort and amazing artwork to support this show plus everyone who put bids on & followed the auction- now the exhibition can happen!

Here's a preview of some of the amazing artwork still to go under the hammer . . .

If anyone out there would like to contribute a Searle-esque picture just drop me a line at the email address in my blogger profile.

Auction highlight

Two Tropen fountain pens used by Ronald Searle are in the eBay shop now!  Visit the Cartoon Museum SF store and hit view all items. You'll see them listed individually.  Searle posters to follow next week.

SOLD!

Ronald Searle collector & fountain pen enthusiast Uli Meyer is custodian of the pens in London.  He describes their condition:
"The pen is five or six decades old but I presume that it is usable. I haven't tried them and I never would. Ronald labelled all his pens and nibs meticulously. I very much hope that the winner of the pen will not use it. This pen is special because it came out of Ronald's pen drawer with his note attached, last used by the man himself. I would hope that the pen would be kept as it is. "
