Auction highlight

Two Tropen fountain pens used by Ronald Searle are in the eBay shop now!  Visit the Cartoon Museum SF store and hit view all items. You'll see them listed individually.  Searle posters to follow next week.

SOLD!

Ronald Searle collector & fountain pen enthusiast Uli Meyer is custodian of the pens in London.  He describes their condition:
"The pen is five or six decades old but I presume that it is usable. I haven't tried them and I never would. Ronald labelled all his pens and nibs meticulously. I very much hope that the winner of the pen will not use it. This pen is special because it came out of Ronald's pen drawer with his note attached, last used by the man himself. I would hope that the pen would be kept as it is. "

Ronald Searle #2

SOLD!

The Searle family have donated TWO of Ronald's own fountain pens to the auction.  They are not Mont Blanc but the German brand Tropen.  They are not in perfect condition but evidently used by Searle to create his drawings.  He would generally use fountain pens to sketch on location for reportage assignments.  Each has a handwritten notation by Searle detailing the functionality of each pen.  He was meticulous in recording the effectiveness of each of is drawing implements.
The pens will be listed seperately when the eBay auction launches.  Something for Searle completists, fountain pen enthusiasts and cartoon historians . . .

Eric Goldberg Master Animator
Los Angeles, CA

Eric Goldberg is recognized by his peers and animation students everywhere as the preeminent practitioner of broad, cartoony, hand-drawn animation.  Influenced by the masters of the past at Warner Bros and Disney Eric infused modern Disney films with highly memorable characters like Aladdin's Genie voiced by Robin Williams,  'Hercules' Phil voiced by Danny Devito and Louis the alligator in 'The Princess & the Frog' .
Eric co-directed Disney's 'Pocahontas' and supervised the exquisite animation in Fantasia 2000s 'rhapsody In Blue' inspired by the artwork of cartoonist Al Hirschfeld. The design of 'Aladdin' was also informed by the work of Hirschfeld and Eric's drawing for this auction represents his vision of what the film may have looked like had it been designed by the savage pen of Ronald Searle instead!
